HUGHESVILLE HOUSE FIRE SATURDAY
A house fire Saturday displaced a Hughesville family but there were no injuries reported. According to the Sun Gazette, police say the family of five was alerted to the fire with a smoke detector, and that neighbors also saw flames on the porch of the home on North Broad Street and called 911 around 2pm. Fire officials who were headed to a brush fire near Tom Hill Road were rerouted to the house fire and got it under control in about 20 minutes. Authorities say the fire on the porch also damaged the home’s exterior and roof was determined to be accidental. Crews from Hughesville, Picture Rocks, Montoursville, Lairdsville and Montgomery were at the scene.
MAN ATTACKS NEIGHBOR WITH BAT
A Williamsport man has been charged with assault and disorderly conduct after he threatened a neighbor with a baseball bat. According to North the assault is the second time 31 year old Joseph Martin used the bat and threatened violence this month near the 400 block of Rural Avenue. Police interviewed him March 19th about reports that he previously struck a telephone pole with the bat and smashed the windshield of a neighbor’s car after he wouldn’t give him a ride to work. Martin’s formal arraignment is April 21st.
STUDENTS FILE LAWSUIT AGAINST WASD
A civil suit against Williamsport Area School district has been filed by four former female students of the school. According to the Sun Gazette, the lawsuit names Christopher P. Yoder, teacher Mel Mitstifer, and the district, the high and middle schools and states the district failed to protect them from sexual harassment, and did not monitor or restrict access of Yoder to students after prior misconduct had been brought to light. The charges include neglect and assault. The defendents who are named by initials in the case are seeking compensatory and punitive damages. Yoder is currently suspended without pay and involved in a disciplinary hearing with the school.
UNRESTRICTED FISHING AND DAM REPAIR COMING SOON
A slow drawdown of water at Rose Valley Lake to repair the aging dam there will allow anglers in the area to fish without restrictions as they anticipate repairs in 2026. According to the Sun Gazette, the lifting of creel limits by the state Fish and Boat Commission, which manages the lake in Gamble Township will be posted and remain in effect until Jan. 1, 2026, unless the commission shall by appropriate action, approve the designation or redesignation of waters. The Fish and Boat commission says repair of the 25-foot-high, 410-foot-long earthen dam on Mill Creek is necessary due to its aging structure, and is estimated to cost about $5 million.
MAN IN JAIL OVER CORRUPTION OF MINORS
A 24 year old man who police say was messaging who he thought was a 14 year old girl, was actually conversing with a decoy person out to expose the man’s crime. According to North Central PA dot com, after a series of inappropriate messages to the alleged minor, Bobby George was later confronted by the decoy who questioned him. Police say he eventually admitted during the exchange that he knew the age of the person he thought he was chatting with. The records of the conversations were turned in to police in December and George is being charged with statutory sexual assault, corruption of minors, unlawful contact with a minor and more. His bail was set at 200 thousand dollars.
UNION COUNTY DATA BREACH
A data breach is under investigation in Union County. According to North Central PA dot com, officials from the county determined on March 17th that cyber criminals used ransomware and took certain data from its network that is related to individuals involved with county law enforcement, court related matters, and other county business. A notice was posted on the county website about the breach on March 21st with a promise to provide required written notice to individuals who may have been affected and will offer complimentary credit monitoring services where appropriate. It’s available to read at unioncountypa.org. They recommend those who may have been affected to monitor personal account closely for fraudulent activity.
GAMES OF CHANCE ON THE BALLOT IN SOME TOWNSHIPS
A question asking whether residents want to allow small games of chance will be on the ballot this upcoming Election Day in Porter, Mifflin, Cascade, and Gamble Townships. According to WNEP, Democratic and Republican voters in those townships will see the question at the bottom of their ballot when they vote on May 20th, Even though Pennsylvania is a closed primary state, third party voters will receive a special ballot to voice their opinion. Most municipalities in Lycoming County already allow small games of chance.
POOL RENOVATIONS IN DANVILLE START TODAY
The Danville Area Community Center (DACC) will begin a major pool improvement project today, marking the next step in its $1.5 million Embracing Our Legacy, Growing for the Future renovations and capital campaign. The project will replace the pool’s aging filtration system, install new LED lighting, and complete essential maintenance. According to a press release, 194,000 gallons of pool water will be drained for the project which is expected to enhance water quality, increase energy efficiency, and ensure long-term reliability of the facility. Denny Hamlin ended an agonizing 10-year winless streak at Martinsville Speedway Sunday and earned the 55th victory of his career.
44-year-old Hamlin also snapped a 31-race winless streak since last April at Dover.
Christopher Bell, who leads the Cup Series with three wins in 2025, had the pole and finished second, Bubba Wallace took third as Toyotas swept the top three. Chase Elliott and Kyle Larson in Chevys rounded out the top five.
