HUGHESVILLE HOME BURNS, DISPLACING FOUR
A house in Hughesville caught fire yesterday afternoon and despite efforts by neighbors and first responders, the structure was engulfed in flames and four residents are displaced. According to the Sun Gazette, neighbors noticed flames coming from the home at 185 N. Second Street and several passersby called 911. The homeowners, Calvin and Christina Murray, were not home at the time, but their two dogs were freed and survived the two-alarm fire. Multiple companies battled the blaze for about 45 minutes until they got it under control, and two firefighters suffered minor injuries. A neighbor’s home also sustain minor damage. The Red Cross is assisting the victims of the fire.
DOMESTIC ABUSE SUSPECT JAILED ON HIGH BAIL
A Muncy man was in court recently to answer to charges that he threatened, strangled, bit, and kicked a woman in February in Fairfield Township. According to the Sun Gazette, a police affidavit says that 28 year old Dandre Thomas Atkisson allegedly instigated the domestic disturbance at 528 Ruben Kehrer Road and caused obvious injury to the woman. Atkisson was charged with felony strangulation, terroristic threats, simple assault and harassment. He was incarcerated in lieu of 150 thousand dollars bail.
FREE SMOKE DETECTORS INSTALLED IN SUNBURY TODAY
In coordination with Susquehanna Valley United Way’s Day of Action today the American Red Cross will be in Sunbury to distribute and install smoke detectors in area homes. According to officials from the American Red Cross Pennsylvania Rivers Chapter, volunteers will begin at 9am at Rescue Hose Company on Edison Avenue and go door-to-door installing free smoke alarms and sharing fire safety tips with local families as part of the part of the Red Cross Home Fire Campaign, which is in place to reduce home fire deaths and injuries. CUTTERS TO RECOGNIZE LOCAL EDUCATORS
There’s a new initiative this season to recognize local educators by the Williamsport Crosscutters. WOMAN ARRESTED FOR PEPPER SPRAYING BOY ON DIRTBIKE
A woman from South Renovo is being charged with reckless endangerment, harassment and disorderly conduct after she pepper sprayed a minor riding a dirt bike on April 13th. According to North Central PA dot com, state police say 36 year old Amanda Ann Hurneman was walking with her child in the 300 block of Spruce Alley and when the boy passed by and turned toward her, she allegedly jumped from her yard and sprayed his face. The boy was wearing eye protection and suffered skin irritation. His father called police who arrested Hurneman. She has a preliminary hearing May 19th with no bail listed.
INMATE FACES NEW CHARGES AFTER ESCAPE ATTEMPT
A Lycoming County Prison inmate from Tioga County who had been incarcerated since last February and was moved to the pre-release center on County Farm Road in Loyalsock Township, was captured after he attempted to escape on March 31st. According to the Sun Gazette, 35 year old Jesse Greiner told a supervisor at the facility that he was going for a walk before he was ordered to stop, chased and then tased when he struggled with authorities to get away. Griener was apprehended and then immediately returned to county prison. He will face new felony charges of escape and flight to avoid apprehension with bail set at 10 thousand dollars.
HUMAN SERVICES EXPO TODAY AT PENN COLLEGE
Rep. Jamie Flick is hosting his third annual Human Services Expo and Speaker Series today at Penn College of Technology (PCT). The speaker series focuses on mental health and addiction in youth, and will feature speakers from Lock Haven University and BLaST Intermediate Unit 17 and will take place from 1-3 p.m. at Penn’s Inn on the PCT campus. The Human Services Expo follows from 3-6 p.m. at PCT’s Field House. The expo will host vendors with free resources on aging, autism, behavioral health, independent living, medical assistance, mental health, substance abuse, veterans’ services, and more. LOCAL ORGANIST RECEIVES SCHOLARSHIP
A senior at St John Neumann Regional Academy was awarded the 2025 Budd Memorial Scholarship from the Williamsport Music Club during an event at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church this week. According to a press release, organist Lucas Bower received the $1,500.00 scholarship which is awarded annually to a Lycoming County high school senior planning to continue their education in music and is supported by the generosity of the Club and its patrons. Bower is a student of Jeffrey Johnson and plans to attend Lycoming College this fall to study business and music.
