SUNBURY PARENTS ARRESTED AFTER INFANT DEATH
Police responded to a home on N. 6th Street in Sunbury Thursday morning after they received a call about an unresponsive infant around 3am. According to the Daily Item 31 year old Ashley Usadel and 35 year old Travis Smart have been charged with felony involuntary manslaughter and endangerment after the 6-day old infant was found deceased while in its parents’ care. Police say Usadel reported to police that she fell asleep holding the infant. Her bail was set at $50,000 at 10%. Smart’s his bail was set at $10,000 at 10%. Their preliminary hearings are on April 22nd.
SEX OFFENDER CAUGHT STALKING CHILDREN AT LOCAL STORE
A man who is included on the Megan’s Law site for two prior convictions of indecent assault of a child was recently reported stalking children at a sporting goods store at Lycoming Mall Circle in Muncy, and was also seen on surveillance video near a victim committing lewd acts in early March. According to North Central PA dot com, the mother of a child who reported being followed and touched by Shane William Kimball, checked the PA State Police sex offender website and identified him before reporting the incident to troopers. Kimball was interviewed by police and is being charged with six counts of stalking, indecent assault without consent, indecent assault of a child and more. He is being held without bail.
BODY CAMS FOR STATE POLICE IN PA
After a two-year roll-out, Pennsylvania State Police announced yesterday that patrol troopers are now equipped with body-worn cameras, including upgraded video recording in all patrol vehicles. Cameras will be worn daily by an estimated 3,000 troopers. Pennsylvania contracted an Arizona company Axon Enterprise Inc., on a five-year deal for the program. Video footage can be requested by the public, but only through provisions covered under Act 22 of 2017. The body camera project began as a pilot program in Cumberland County in summer 2023.
PINWHEELS FOR PREVENTION OF CHILD ABUSE AWARENESS
UPMC Williamsport is asking visitors to plant blue pinwheels in the hospital’s front lawn to help raise awareness of National Child Abuse Prevention Month. According to a press release, the Forensic Nursing team at UPMC says the blue color of the pinwheels reflects hope, happiness, and the bright future wanted for children instead of the negative aspects of child abuse. Forensic nurses work closely with local law enforcement and child advocacy centers on child abuse cases.
FATAL CRASH ON ROUTE 220 WEDNESDAY
A wrong way driver on Route 220 North Wednesday evening around 6:30pm caused the death of a driver and serious injuries to their passenger. According to Pennsylvania State Police, 29 year old Dwight Meyer of Lock Haven entered route 220 north while traveling south. Meyer’s green Chevy Malibu and the gray Mazda CX-5 driven by 28 year old Amanda Geisewite with 29 year old Evan Geisewite – both from Loganton – in the passenger seat, collided causing entrapment from which all parties were extracted by mechanical means. Amanda Geiswite was transported to the hospital with critical injuries. Evan Geiswite was transported via Life Flight but officials say he later died from his injuries. Meyer was also treated for his serious injuries. An investigation is ongoing.
MONTGOMERY MAN ARRESTED FOR ASSAULT, FALSE IMPRISONMENT
A man from Montgomery is accused of threatening three people and pulling one person forcibly into his car on March 5th. According to reports by state police, 29-year-old Wesley Ross allegedly followed two women and a man in a vehicle from Swoyersville to Forty Fort, where he then cut them off in traffic and confronted them at a gas station. Ross is now facing multiple misdemeanors and summary offenses including false imprisonment, after he allegedly forced a woman into his car and pulled her hair to force her to remain in the vehicle when she tried to escape
OVERNIGHT WORK ON I-80 EAST NEAR I-99 CORRIDOR
There will be overnight roadwork in the High-Speed Interchange area eastbound on I-80 between Interstates 80 and 99 starting Sunday night from 6pm to 6am. According to PennDOT, the project is part of a traffic safety enhancement that will provide a direct connection between the two highways, making it unnecessary to travel along Route 26 and will realign service for local traffic. Overall work on this three phase project will support the regional freight economy and improve the reliability of roadway travel throughout the region.
GRANTS TO SUPPORT LEWISBURG SMALL BUSINESSES
Two grants have been awarded to the Lewisburg Downtown Partnership to support local business. According to the Standard Journal, the 175 thousand dollars in grants come from the Governor’s Main Street Matters program through the PA Department of Community and Economic Development and are earmarked for Business improvement and implementation. Some projects to utilize the grant money include brown historic street signs, an interactive downtown map, historic highway signage, and gateway signage at the intersection of Routes 45 and 15.
