DETAILS ABOUT DEADLY ACCIDENT ON I-80
Traffic in Montour County did not resume normally on I-80 westbound Friday until after 4pm following two fatal accidents about 7 hours apart. According to the Sun Gazette, the Montour County Coroner said 48-year-old Efrain Martinez-Vargas of the Moosic who was driving a box truck was killed in the 16 vehicle pile-up at mile marker 218 in Liberty Township after a tractor-trailer slid on black ice and struck Martinez-Vargas and started the chain reaction around 2:45am. A two vehicle crash occurred in the backups around 9:45am at mile marker 225 in Valley Township in which 22 year old Courtney Hurry of Lewisburg struck the back of a flat-bed trailer and died of blunt force trauma. State police continue to investigate the accidents.
SUNBURY MAN WITH WARRANTS ARRESTED AFTER CHASE
A 39 year old Sunbury man was arrested in January and has a preliminary hearing in April after he led police on a high speed chase before he crashed into a tree in Mifflinburg. According to North Central PA dot com, Buddy Steven Hunley crashed his car on the 800 block of Chestnut Street after being followed by police and then fled on foot. Police discovered Hunley had an arrest warrant from Delaware for failing to report to probation and had to tase him to take him into custody. He faces nine charges, including felony flight and drug possession.
SHAPIRO SUES TRUMP ADMINISTRATION
A lawsuit was filed in federal court Thursday by Governor Josh Shapiro against federal agencies under President Donald Trump illegally withholding billions in aid already approved by Congress. According to media outlets, Shapiro’s administration says 2.5 billion dollars in grants and reimbursements remain stalled, affecting programs for energy efficiency, water infrastructure, and environmental cleanup. A federal judge recently ordered the Trump administration to unfreeze all grants , but Shapiro’s lawyers say agencies are ignoring court orders to restore suspended funds. State Rep. Joe Hamm, R-Hepburn Township says Shapiro is playing politics and wasting taxpayer money by suing the president.
GRANTS IN PLACE TO RESTORE BANK OF PENN’S CREEK
A Growing Greener Plus grant from the Department of Environmental Protection for 90 thousand dollars has been accepted by SEDA-COG Joint Rail Authority to stabilize an eroding bank on a tributary of Penns Creek along the Selinsgrove Industrial Track. According to the Authority, they will collaborate with Susquehanna University, the Chesapeake Conservancy, and the North Shore Railroad Company to repair the bank erosion using an updated method to ensure that the railroad does not erode any more than it already has as well as reduce nutrient and sediment pollution in the watershed.
MAN ACCUSED OF WAVING GUN AT UNI-MART IN CUSTODY
The Montgomery man arrested in January and facing felony charges for allegedly waiving a gun outside the Uni-Mart has been found with more firearms that he is not authorized to have. According to North Central PA dot com after police responded to an OnStar call at a location in Clinton County February 4th, they observed the vehicle that sent the signal which contained several firearms registered to 37-year-old David J. Pierce who was not at the scene at first. Police obtained a warrant and returned to the vehicle, taking Pierce into custody. He was charged with five felony counts of illegally possessing a firearm and one felony count of carrying a firearm without a license. He is in Lycoming County Prison in lieu of $75,000 monetary bail.
CRUELTY TO ANIMALS CASE INVESTIGATED IN BRADFORD COUNTY
State police in Towanda are investigating reports of animal cruelty after a horse was shot in December in Bradford County. According to troopers, the owner of the horse reported that the injury happened while her horse was in a pasture on Cash Creek Road in Ulster Township. There are no updates on the horse’s condition after the shooting. If you have information, call State police 570-265-2186.
NEW ACT TO CHANGE FENTANYL LAWS
The Pa. Attorney General joined a multi-state coalition in support of the HALT Fentanyl Act, that will close what is called the “fentanyl loophole,” something that lets traffickers avoid fentanyl-related penalties when moving fentanyl-alikes . If it is passed, it will put fentanyl and fentanyl-related substances in a permanent Class I scheduling. Congress has temporarily classified fentanyl and fentanyl analogues as Schedule I drugs, but that status is set to expire March 31. The House of Representatives have already passed the Act with a large majority, and it is now up to the Senate to give approval.
